Compensation for Cancelled Flights Explained:

If certain requirements are fulfilled, compensation for cancelled flights, as per EC 261, may be applied. If any of the following apply to you, you might be entitled to compensation for cancelled flights:

1. Your flight was scheduled to depart from the EU; in certain circumstances, flights to the EU might be eligible.

2.The airline informed you of the cancellation less than 14 days before the scheduled departure.

3. If you opted for an alternative flight, the new arrival time significantly differed from your original flight (specific criteria apply).

4. The cancellation took place 1 to 3 years; it varies from country to country.

5. You possessed a confirmed flight reservation, substantiated by a booking confirmation containing details such as the flight number and passenger names.

6.The cause of the cancellation was within the airline’s control, including operational issues, technical difficulties, or strikes by airline staff.

For Cancelled flights under EC 261 the airline must offer to their passengers following 3 choices:

  • A complete or partial refund of your initial ticket, together with an additional flight back to your original departure place if necessary.
  • The earliest possible alternative transport option to your final destination.
  • A new ticket, based on availability, to your ultimate destination at a later time.

How much can you get in compensation for cancelled flight?

When the airline has informed you less than 14 days before scheduled departure for cancelled flights, under EC 261 you are eligible for compensation which depends from several factors like: flight distance, length of delay of the alternative flight would be when it arrived at your final destination, whether your flight is within the EU or not.

The compensation amount is variable, sometimes half, based on the duration of the delay in reaching your final destination compared to your initially scheduled flight and length of your flight distance.

DistanceLess than               2 hours2-3 hours3-4 hoursMore than 4 hoursFlight never took place
Flight distance up to 1500 km€125€250€250€250€250
Flight distance from 1500 km to 3.500 km€200€200€400€400€400
Flight distance more than 3.500 km€300€300€300€600€600

According to EC 261, all canceled flights are eligible for compensation unless the airline provides more than 14 days’ notice, with a single exception:

  • In cases where the airline proposes an alternative route, it can avoid paying cancellation compensation if specific criteria are met:
Advance NoticeRe-routing requirements
14 DaysNone
7-13 daysAlternative flight departing no more than 2 hours and arriving less than 4 hours after the original flight
Less than 7 daysAlternative flight departing no more than 1 hour and arriving less than 2 hours after the original flight

Which are extraordinary circumstances when flight delay compensation is not applicable?

In general, these are circumstances outside of the airline’s control. Events such as lightning strikes, inclement weather, medical crises, airport worker strikes, limits on air traffic control, political turmoil, terrorist attacks, ….

Do airline strikes qualify as extraordinary circumstances?

The strikes by flight attendants do not qualify as extraordinary circumstances. So, on those cases airlines are responsible to pay for flight delay compensation.
